Michael is a Sales Associate (please note that Michael had to get his real estate license so that he could talk).  A person must have a real estate license to engage in real estatee activities and give real estate counsel.

His full time vocation is the executive director of a mission society that does translation work.  But, be assured, he’s an outstanding REALTOR®, and has earned the LMC© designation (Loss Mitigation Certification), and has been the one behind the scenes to promote Linda and Nathan’s success.

As you saw in the dialogue above about Linda, she and Michael met through the newspaper when (then) Sgt. Donald Michael Hackbardt was an advisor with the Korean Military Advisory Group   in the farthest NE part of South Korea backing up US Air Force officers as they called in air strikes against North Korean infiltrators. Michael actually served above the 38th parallel in that mountainous area of the country.

Nevertheless, although Michael was an appointee of his State of Michigan congressman to the US Naval Academy… he failed his physical because of 20/40 vision in his left eye, which he later discovered could have been waived.

So he went to The University of Michigan on an academic scholarship (because he had been sick most of his Senior year in high school, he was denied an athletic scholarship), but still played Freshman basketball as a “walk on” in 1965, then tore his ankle up just before Christmas.  Then, after enlisting for three years in the US Army (January 1967 to October 1969), Michael came home to finish his undergraduate degree at The University of Michigan.  He graduated in December 1973 after spending time in the School of Engineering; a year in the Physical Education program (when he was in the off season work out part of the football program the summer after he returned from Korea); the School of Literature, Science, and Arts; and two years in U of M’s Business School.  Quite an academic career, but one that many people know has served him exceptionally well.

Following graduation from The University of Michigan in December 1973 Michael was hired as a computer salesman and moved to Southern California where he was one of their top salesmen in 1976.  In August 1977 Michael was transferred to Southfield, MI (a suburb of Detroit) where he was one of IBM’s top salespeople in 1980, 1981, and 1982.

In July 1982 Michael shocked the IBM corporation and it’s top managment with his resignation (given his sales accomplishments and upward executive path) and entered Concordia Theological Seminary (Ft. Wayne, IN) to study for the Christian ministry where he obtained his Master of Divinity (M.Div.) degree.  That led him to become a parish pastor from 1986-88 in the Twin Cities area of Minnesota, a member of the seminary staff for nearly three years (that he had attended from 1982-86), was offered the VP of Advancement position at the largest Social Service organization in Texas after serving as their Director of Development (North Texas) from 1991-92, and then left Texas to assume the leadership of God’s Word to the Nations Mission Society (www.godsword.org) in Cleveland, OH, in June 1992.  The Society moved to the Orange Park, FL area in April 2005.

As most people know, Michael is skilled in formating, translation, linguistics, research techniques of all types (he does all the layout and research for LINDA’S LETTER), business skills that few people possess, negotiation, marketing strategy, and (of course) sales (inasmuch as he was one of the top producers for most of his 8 years with IBM).  Thanks be to God for all the gifts and talents with which he has blessed Michael!  Although God gets all the glory, he really has made Michael the “expert” in a variety of areas.
